Maintenance Manager

Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY:   

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance department's operations to ensure the continuous and efficient functioning of production equipment, facility systems, and infrastructure in a food manufacturing environment. This role requires strategic planning, leadership, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage, train, and develop the maintenance team, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence.
  • Plan and delegate maintenance tasks, ensuring timely completion and alignment with production schedules.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and identify training opportunities to enhance team skills and capabilities.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to optimize equipment reliability and lifespan.
  • Oversee troubleshooting, repairs, and modifications to production machinery and facility systems.
  • Monitor the performance of equipment and facilities, addressing issues proactively to prevent breakdowns.
  • Enforce compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), food safety regulations, and company policies.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct regular safety audits and address potential hazards promptly.
  • Manage the maintenance budget, including labor, tools, spare parts, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with procurement to ensure availability of necessary materials and supplies.
  • Plan and oversee large-scale repairs, equipment installations, and facility upgrades.
  • Work closely with production, quality assurance, and other departments to align maintenance activities with operational goals.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for specialized services or major repairs.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, equipment performance, and downtime events.
  • Generate reports and present insights to senior management, highlighting areas for improvement and achievements.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and audit requirements through accurate documentation.

 

Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills are important.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, automated machinery, and facility systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, troubleshoot, etc.).
  • Proficiency in maintenance management software and tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.

 

GMP’S AND HACCP:

  • Follow GMP’s at all times.  (Wear hairnets, clean uniforms, etc.)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Able to stoop, bend, stretch and walk unassisted for up to 10 hours at a time.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be willing to work under various temperatures ranging from typical 45 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and will include production machinery, computers, printers, telephones, and normal communication.  Hearing protection will be required for all plant activities.

 

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, industrial, mechanical, electrical or related field preferred; equivalent work experience accepted.
  • 5+ years of experience in maintenance management, preferably in the food manufacturing industry.

Experience:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills with a proven record of accomplishment of managing diverse teams.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or related methodologies.
  • Electrical and PLC
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
